Enola Gay

Just saw a program on the History channel about the atomic bombs at the end of the second world war. A quick check with Google Earth shows that the pits used to load the bombs are easily visible from space, as is the airfield. Well, most of tinian shows up as an airfield or base area for that matter.

The two pits are visible here:

15.083391993, 145.634355494

with the airstrips visible running east to west just below.

If you look at Tinian at, say, 5 or 6 000 feet elevation, you can clearly make out the Atomic Bomb pits. The pit on the Left was used to load Little Boy. The one on the right was used to load Fat Man, iirc. They are encased in glass now and are a tourist attraction on Tinian.

The 509th Compound is entirely gone, but you can make out, barely, the road trail that goes from the top of the "heart" towards the northwest towards where the Bomb Assembly Building used to be. None of the Quonsets are still up. Only North Field remains, and is being reactivated pursuant to the Japan US security treaty.
